Herbert E. Stickney

On Friday, July 31,2026, Herbert Eugene Stickney passed away at his Niskayuna home surrounded by his loving family.

Herb is survived by his loving wife Lois of 44 years. Herb is also survived by, as he referred to them as the two blessings in his life, his son Todd (Karen) Stickney and daughter Tracy Stickney (Aaron Persing). Stepchildren Wendy Fisher, Timothy Hillers, Dean Villegas. Herb said he was honored to be the grandfather of his grandchildren, Jordan (Kalyn) Alburger and Kelsey Stickney, step-grandchildren Karlee (Corey) Bustle, Luca (Kerry) Covington, Dylan Fisher, Jennifer, Daniel and Vincent. As well as two great-grandchildren Alayna and Austin Alburger.

Herb is survived by his brother John Stickney and sisters Sandy (Al) Hutchins and Linda Wilson. He is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Herb was predeceased by his parents Herbert and Jean Stickney as well as his brother Joseph Stickney.

Herb was born in Saranac Lake, NY on August 4, 1943. He was raised in Brainardsville, NY where he attended and graduated from Chateaugay Central School in 1961. Following his graduation of High School Herb went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Navy from November 1961 to March 1966. He served as an Aviation/Helicopter mechanic.

After an Honorable Discharge from the United States Navy he moved to Schenectady, NY where he served in the Niskayuna Police Department starting in 1971. During this time with the Niskayuna Police Department Herb graduated from the FBI National Academy, Session 141 in 1985. He also received his Bachelor’s Degree from Empire State College in 1991. Herb held the highest rank of Deputy Chief and retired in 1995 as a Detective Sergeant.

After retirement Herb continued working, teaching at Schenectady Community College and then as a Welfare Fraud Investigator in Schoharie County.

Herb was a licensed plumber and most recently worked with his friends at Gleason Funeral Home.

Herb was an avid Boston Red Sox Fan and enjoyed Nascar. Herb especially enjoyed his time riding his Harley Davidson Motorcycle with his friends, son Todd and grandson Jordan. He loved spending time with his family, especially with his new furry companion Lily.

Special thanks to all of his friends who were more like family. The one’s who called him “Boss” and the ones who were close to him at his time at Ellis Hospital and as he continued back home.

A special thank you to the Nurses and Staff at Ellis Hospital A-5 Unit for their wonderful compassion and care towards Herb during his stay at Ellis. Thank you to Community Hospice, especially Nurse Laura for her guidance, support and compassion during Herb’s final days.

To everyone, Herb wanted to say, “Thank you for being my friend.”

Calling hours will be at the Gleason Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 5th from 2 until 6pm, followed by a short service, with a Celebration of Life at Katie O’Byrnes, Wall Street, Schenectady.

Herb will be buried at Gerald B. H. Solomon National Cemetery on a future date with full Military Honors.
